OBA Akiolu : Tinubu’s stubbornness made him last man standing in Nigeria’s politics

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu speaking at the launch of a N50 billion Education Trust Fund in Oyo State, has said that the place of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu could not be waved aside in Nigeria’s politics, noting that though Tinubu is stubborn but his stubbornness is paying off in Lagos State.

Oba Akiolu, who said this, in Ibadan yesterday, at the launch of a N50 billion Education Trust Fund in Oyo State, said Tinubu’s stubbornness made him to be the last man standing during the PDP onslaught in the South West. The monarch also lauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s outstanding performance in Lagos, saying that the foundation laid by Tinubu in the state is being built upon by his successors. The Lagos monarch said: “I am his (Tinubu) father and the father for all and I will continue to be their father.

I don’t hide my feelings; nobody can take away Lagos from APC, at the federal level all hands need to be on deck.” Oba Akiolu, who was accompanied by some traditional monarchs to the event, also assured the gathering that the lingering chieftaincy crisis between Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, would soon be over.

In his address at the event, Governor Abiola Ajimobi said the launching of the education trust fund was part of his administration’s efforts at revamping education in the state. He noted that education was too important to be left alone in the hand of government, adding that there was the need to engage the public, hence the effort at initiating the fund with pragmatic effort to reposition and bring back quality education in the state.

The fund, according to the governor, was a crucial step at restoring the legacy of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on quality education.

Ajimobi who used the opportunity reel out programmes and achievements of his administration in educational sector in the state said “what we are doing is to empower our people to be able to torch lives.” Earlier in his address of welcome, the Chairman of the Oyo Education Trust Fund (ETF), Chief (Mrs.) Onikepo Akande implored all and sundry  to reflect on the state of education in Oyo State, adding that it became imperative to examine where they were, where they ought to be and how to attain the new target.

She noted that it was then that they would be able to see the need to contribute generously to the fund for the purpose of salvaging the present and the future of education in the state. Describing education as very critical to the progress of any nation, Mrs. Akande expressed sadness that the state of education in the part of this part of the country has become so poor that one could not be seen setting pace in education as it was in the past.

It was in that regard that Mrs. Akande stressed that the need for the resuscitation of the lost glory and improvement of the quality of education in the state, hence the idea behind the launch was to bring back the glory of education in the state.

However, some group of individuals were recognized for their impactful contributions to educational sector in the state.
