Over 19K Ghanaians infected with HIV in 2018 – GAC

The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that about 19,100 people were infected with HIV in 2018 in Ghana.

The Commission said 3,300 persons out of the infected number were children under the age of 14.

Meanwhile, the number of orphans in the country reported to be infected with HIV/AIDS are 260,000.

The figures were disclosed by the Acting Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Kyeremeh Atuahene.

Mr. Atuahene was speaking on the 2018 national estimates and projections report in Accra.

He said new indicators such as fertility, mortality and breastfeeding and various sources of data were used for the projections.

The global 90-90-90 fast track target spells out that by the end of 2020, 90 % all people with HIV will know their status.

Mr. Atuahene said Ghana’s is doing well in the fight against HIV/AIDS but admitted meeting the 2020 target is highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, the Aids Commission is hopeful of catering for aids orphans who don’t already have social support through the operationalisation of the aids fund.
