Emeka Rollas, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has confirmed the passing of Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, widely known as Junior Pope.
The unfortunate incident occurred when Junior Pope and three colleagues were returning from a movie shoot by boat and accidentally fell into Anam River in Anambra.
Taking to his Instagram page, Rollas expressed deep sadness over the loss, mentioning that despite efforts from medical professionals in two hospitals to revive him after noticing some signs of life, they were unable to save him.
Junior Pope, who entered the Nollywood scene in 2006, gained recognition for his roles in various movies, particularly for his portrayal of characters like bodyguards, palace attendants, and servants.
His breakthrough came in 2007 with the movie “Secret Adventures,” directed by Tchidi Chikere. Throughout his career, he appeared in over 150 Nollywood productions, including “Mad Sex,” “Bitter Generation,” and “Vengeance of Bullet.”
He was celebrated for his performances in roles such as criminals, villains, armed robbers, and hitmen, often alongside notable actors like Emma Ehumadu, Sylvester Madu, and Zubby Michael.
Junior Pope’s talent was recognized with awards such as Nollywood Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the Entertainment Factory Awards in 2010, as well as Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and Best Actor of the Year at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
His contributions to the industry will be remembered fondly.
