Ugezu Ugezu, a seasoned actor and filmmaker, has addressed the recent spate of deaths within the Nigerian movie industry.
Responding on his Instagram page, Ugezu contested the notion that Nollywood is under siege due to the deaths of several actors, including notable figures like Mr Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, Sisi Quadri, Adejumoke Aderounmu, and the most recent, Junior Pope, all within the first quarter of 2024.
He argued that deaths among actors are not exclusive to Nollywood and emphasized that individuals in various professions pass away regularly. Ugezu pointed out that the difference lies in the public nature of celebrity deaths, whereas other deaths often go unreported.
Ugezu attributed the surge in deaths in Nigeria to the systematic breakdown of the healthcare sector rather than solely attributing it to issues within Nollywood. He stressed the need to shift away from attributing these deaths to spiritual causes and instead address the broader systemic failures affecting healthcare in the country.
In essence, Ugezu highlighted the broader societal issues contributing to the increased mortality rate, rather than viewing it solely as a crisis within the entertainment industry.
