Ian Wright, an Arsenal legend, has criticized Gabriel Martinelli for “switching off” during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa. The loss dealt a blow to Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League title, as goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins secured victory for Aston Villa.
Arsenal had hoped to reclaim the top spot in the league following Liverpool’s unexpected loss to Crystal Palace earlier in the day.
However, their defeat handed defending champions Manchester City a significant advantage, as they now lead Arsenal and Liverpool by two points, with the latter two teams only separated by goal difference.
During his analysis of Arsenal’s defeat on Premier League Productions, Wright pointed out Martinelli’s lack of awareness in the lead-up to Aston Villa’s opening goal. Martinelli, who came on as a substitute in the second half, failed to mark Bailey, allowing him to score from Lucas Digne’s cross.
Wright emphasized the importance of defensive awareness, particularly noting Arsenal’s strong defensive record throughout the season. He highlighted Martinelli’s responsibility to track his man and prevent the goal, stressing the need for improved concentration in crucial moments.
He said: “Look at Martinelli, this is what we’ve been saying because Arsenal have been so good defensively this season. Everyone has been switched on but in this instance, he switches off. Bailey is his man, that’s his man in this situation. He has to get closer to him, it’s as simple as that.”
