The Nigerian government has refuted allegations made by Binance regarding bribery attempts involving Nigerian officials, dismissing them as baseless. According to a press statement from the Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, the government is aware of Binance’s efforts to improve its tarnished reputation but maintains that the allegations are unfounded.
The statement responds to a blog post by Binance CEO Richard Teng, accusing Nigerian officials of demanding a $150 million cryptocurrency payment to resolve a criminal investigation against the company.
However, the government asserts that Binance is being investigated in Nigeria for various offenses, including money laundering, terrorism financing, and illegal trading practices.
The situation escalated when an executive, who was supposed to be in protective custody, fled Nigeria, prompting Interpol to issue an international arrest warrant. The government claims that Binance’s bribery allegations are part of a wider international campaign to undermine Nigeria’s legal processes.
It also highlights legal actions taken against Binance’s founder and former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, in the United States for similar charges, including substantial fines.
