Atiku Abubakar, the former Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, has indicated that he may support his counterpart from the Labour Party, Peter Obi, in the 2027 election.
Currently engaged in merger discussions with stakeholders from various opposition parties, Atiku expressed readiness to back Obi if he is chosen by their party. The hint was given during an interview with BBC Hausa Service.
The recent meeting between Atiku and Obi, held privately, has fueled speculation about a potential merger among opposition parties leading up to the 2027 general elections. Atiku confirmed the move towards alignment among opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming election cycle.
Expressing openness to the possibility of merging parties to achieve a common goal, Atiku emphasized his willingness to support Obi if their party selects him as the presidential candidate for the South-East region.
He reiterated his commitment to abide by the decision of the party regarding presidential zoning, stating that he contested the 2023 presidential ticket because it was open to all party members, but he would defer to the party’s decision if it zoned the ticket to the South or specifically to the South-East.
