The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced an upcoming nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3rd, 2024.
The decision was made due to the failure of the tripartite committee to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage. At a joint press conference in Abuja on Friday, led by TUC President Festus Osifo and NLC leadership, it was expressed that the prolonged negotiations and the government’s inability to meet their demands have left the organized Labour dissatisfied.
The Labour leaders pointed to the expiration of a previous request to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May as the basis for their action. This strike threat signals a significant rise in tensions between the labour unions and the government.
Notably, organised labour had previously walked out of negotiations and turned down two offers from the Federal Government, with the most recent proposal being N60,000.
