Billionaire Elon Musk stated he would prohibit Apple devices at his companies if Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level. Musk, who leads Tesla, SpaceX, and the recently acquired social media platform X, voiced his concern on X.
He called it an “unacceptable security violation” and mentioned that visitors would need to leave their Apple devices in a Faraday cage upon entry.
Earlier, Apple announced a series of AI integrations for their apps and operating systems, including a partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to their devices. Apple claimed their AI was built with privacy as a priority, using a mix of on-device processing and cloud computing.
Musk criticized Apple, saying, “It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!”
Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies, noted it was unlikely anyone would follow Musk’s lead. He explained that Apple was trying to convey that their private cloud was as secure as on-device data, ensuring data anonymization and firewalling.
Additionally, Musk has taken legal action against OpenAI, a company he co-founded in 2015, and its CEO Sam Altman, alleging that OpenAI has deviated from its original mission of developing AI for humanity’s benefit, instead focusing on profit.
