A prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Salihu Lukman, expressed doubts about the party’s ability to win elections without rigging, given the current state of the country and the APC.
In a letter to select APC leaders titled “APC and the Future of Nigerian Democracy”, the chieftain remarked that there is a widespread belief that President Bola Tinubu will only serve one term. He warned that the country might face significant upheavals before reaching 2027.
Lukman stated that his membership in the APC feels pointless and that the nation’s situation has worsened over the past year since Tinubu took office. He criticized Tinubu’s policies as anti-people and inconsistent with his campaign promises.
Lukman also noted that criticism is not tolerated under Tinubu’s administration, unlike under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He expressed hope that Tinubu might recover his democratic principles but acknowledged that the past year has left him doubtful about any significant progress during Tinubu’s tenure.
Lukman called on patriots, democrats, and progressives to mobilize and work towards saving Nigerian democracy, indicating that APC and Tinubu’s government have deviated from their original vision.
He concluded by saying he will join efforts to campaign for the survival and development of democracy in Nigeria, feeling his role in the APC has become futile.
