Following a cholera outbreak that has resulted in 53 fatalities across 31 states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The NCDC announced this move on its official X platform on Monday, citing a dynamic risk assessment that indicated a very high risk of increased cholera transmission in the country.
According to the NCDC, as of June 24, 2024, there have been 1,528 suspected cholera cases and 53 deaths reported across 31 states. The NCDC emphasized that this activation is part of efforts to coordinate the response to the outbreak.
In Ogun state, there has been one death and 25 confirmed cases out of 35 suspected cases. The state government has responded by distributing cholera test kits and treatment supplies to all local government areas and designated treatment centers, with treatment available for free in all government facilities.
The NCDC is collaborating closely with state authorities to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
