Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested he may continue playing for Portugal despite the team’s disappointing exit from Euro 2024. Ronaldo started in all five of Portugal’s matches in the tournament held in Germany, averaging 97 minutes per game.
However, this marks the first time in his career that the Al Nassr forward did not score in open play at a major international tournament.
Following Portugal’s 5-3 defeat to France on penalties in the quarterfinals, Ronaldo broke his silence on social media: “We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez stated after the team’s elimination that it was “too soon” to determine if Ronaldo had played his final game for his country.
Ronaldo has scored 130 goals in 212 appearances for Portugal since his debut in 2003, and he won Euro 2016 with the team.
Although he previously indicated that this record-breaking sixth European Championship would be his last, it is yet to be confirmed whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue playing through the 2026 World Cup when he will be 41 years old.
