The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that the National Grid did not collapse on Saturday, January 11, 2025, but instead experienced a trip.
Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for TCN, issued the clarification following reports that the grid had collapsed, which led to power outages in parts of the country.
TCN explained that around 1:41 PM on Saturday, the Benin-Omotosho transmission line tripped, disrupting the power supply to the Lagos area. Before the incident, the national grid was generating 4,335.63 MW of electricity, but after the tripping, the generation dropped to 2,573.23 MW, indicating that the grid did not collapse.
The tripping affected power plants including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, but these have since been restored, except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still being repaired. TCN emphasized that the issue was limited to the affected area and did not result in a total grid collapse.
In 2024, the national grid suffered 12 collapses, with ongoing challenges such as vandalism impacting the electricity supply.
