The Federal Government has given approval for the establishment of a federal polytechnic in Abuja, which will be named after President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, confirmed the development in a letter sent to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on January 9. Alausa explained that the creation of this polytechnic is part of the government’s goal to ensure that every state has a federal polytechnic.
He noted that the project is in line with the government’s focus on promoting technological and vocational education. The letter requested the FCT minister to identify suitable locations in Gwarinpa for both the temporary and permanent sites of the polytechnic.
A technical team from the Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is expected to carry out an inspection of the proposed sites.
Alausa also mentioned that the government is open to taking over existing higher education institutions in the FCT, provided they meet the criteria for the new polytechnic.
Previously, the NBTE launched an initiative aimed at revitalizing polytechnic education in Nigeria. The NBTE Executive Secretary, Idris Bugaje, highlighted the need to address critical challenges facing polytechnics.
He emphasized plans to strengthen the institutions, foster industry partnerships, and encourage international collaborations. Bugaje further stated that polytechnics must become the driving force behind Nigeria’s economic and industrial development.
