Nigeria’s telecommunications giant, MTN, has rolled back its 200 percent tariff increase on the 15G data plan. The company announced the reversal in a statement on its official X account on Thursday.
Earlier, on Tuesday, MTN had begun enforcing a 200 percent tariff hike for the 15G data bundle along with other data plans—a move that exceeded the 50 percent increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission.
In a Thursday update, the firm apologized to Nigerians for the tariff hike. As the statement reads:
To our 15G digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know.
“We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favourite digital bundle.
“We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast.
“We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.
“In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much.”
MTN Nigeria had initiated a 50 percent tariff hike on Tuesday. However, on Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress urged its members and the public to boycott telco services in protest of the tariff increase.
