Philadelphia has honored its native son, Will Smith, by renaming a portion of North 59th Street as “Will Smith Way.” The 2000 block of North 59th Street, located in the Overbrook section of West Philadelphia near Smith’s alma mater, Overbrook High School, now bears the actor and musician’s name.
The street renaming ceremony took place on March 26, 2025, with city officials, including Mayor Cherelle Parker, in attendance. Mayor Parker praised Smith’s unwavering pride in his Philadelphia roots, stating, “With all of his accomplishments and success, wherever you see him in the world, he is unapologetic about letting you know that ‘I’m Will Smith, in West Philadelphia born and raised.'”
During the event, Smith reflected on his upbringing in Philadelphia, emphasizing the values instilled in him by his family and community. He shared, “The Will Smith Way is encompassed in the lessons I got from my father, my mother, and my grandmother,” highlighting the importance of discipline, hard work, and education.
Smith also recounted the origin of his nickname, “The Fresh Prince,” attributing it to his 10th-grade teacher, Ms. Brenda Brown, who called him “Prince Charming.” He adapted the moniker into “The Fresh Prince,” which later became his stage name and the title of the popular television show that launched his acting career.
In addition to the street renaming, Smith announced plans to return to Philadelphia for a Fourth of July celebration and to release his first full-length album in 20 years, titled “Based on a True Story.” The album features collaborations with artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, and Jack Ross.
