The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it will begin a nationwide clampdown on irregular migrants starting August 1, 2025. This decision was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a meeting with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Abuja.
To facilitate compliance, the government has instituted a three-month grace period commencing May 1, 2025. During this time, irregular migrants are encouraged to regularize their immigration status in accordance with established protocols.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the era of companies obstructing the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) from performing its duties is over. He warned that any organization found hindering the NIS will face strict penalties.
Additionally, the government is set to implement a new Expatriate Administration System (EAS) effective May 1, 2025. This system aims to enhance the management of expatriates in Nigeria, ensuring strict compliance with immigration laws.
The Ministry of Interior has also reviewed fees associated with certain citizenship and business activities to promote sustainability and compliance. A detailed breakdown of these revised fees will be provided officially.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening immigration enforcement and ensuring that all residents and businesses adhere to Nigeria’s immigration laws.
