Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending five days in detention. His release was confirmed on Wednesday evening by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who stated that VDM was handed over to him by the EFCC.
VDM’s arrest on May 2, 2025, at a GTBank branch in Abuja, sparked widespread protests and online campaigns demanding his release. The EFCC stated that his detention was due to “multiple petitions” alleging financial crimes. However, his supporters viewed the arrest as an attempt to silence a prominent critic of the government.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore confirmed VDM’s release via a post on X (formerly Twitter), thanking those who advocated for his freedom.
VDM, known for his outspoken views on national issues and criticism of corruption, has faced previous legal challenges, including charges of cyberstalking and defamation. His latest detention reignited debates over freedom of speech and the rights of activists in Nigeria.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed against VDM, raising questions about the legal grounds for his detention and its implications for his activism.
