Sony has announced a $50 price increase for all PlayStation 5 models in the United States, effective August 21, 2025, citing a challenging economic environment and tariff-related pressures. The new retail prices are $549.99 for the Standard PS5 (previously $499.99), $499.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition (previously $449.99), and $749.99 for the PS5 Pro (previously $699.99).
Console accessories will remain at their current prices. According to Sony, the decision was driven by rising costs linked to U.S. import tariffs from key manufacturing hubs such as China, Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam, which have significantly affected production and distribution. Industry analysts note that this mirrors similar moves by Microsoft and Nintendo, both of which have recently raised hardware prices in response to mounting trade uncertainties.
The timing of the increase, just ahead of major holiday releases and anticipated titles like GTA VI, could impact consumer demand. Buyers looking to purchase a PS5 at the old price have until August 20 before the new pricing takes effect.
