Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a statement released late Sunday by his spokesperson, Daniel Alabrah.

The statement did not specify the governor’s next political move but confirmed that the decision followed “deep consultations with stakeholders and loyalists” across the state. It added that Governor Diri remains committed to the peace, unity, and progress of Bayelsa regardless of party affiliation.

Political observers say the development could significantly alter the state’s political landscape, especially as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies its southern expansion strategy ahead of the 2026 elections.
