Blitzbok winning streak sunk by Baker

A sensational last second try by two time World Sevens Player of the year Perry Baker was enough to stop South Africa’s amazing 36-game winning streak and give his USA side a 12-7 win at the Singapore Sevens on Saturday.

The Blitzboks had an exceptionally poor game, conceding a number of penalties, but got themselves level in the second half before the last second heroics by Baker stopped them in their tracks.

It was the first time the Blitzboks had lost since last season and ended the second best winning streak ever in the HSBC World Series.

The Blitzboks now will face Fiji in the quarter-finals, after the South Sea Magicians won their pool despite losing to Ireland earlier in the day.

The Blitzboks had already had easy wins over Kenya and Canada earlier in the day, but they had trouble against the physicality of the Americans, who scored early as David Still stepped out of a tackle to run in for the try.

The Blitzboks got over the line in the second half after Ryan Oosthuizen went in at the corner and Dewald Human grabbed a sensational conversion to level matters from the touchline.

But in the end they were beaten by a perfect offload from Carlin Isles and the speed of Baker did the rest.
