“The deepest form of despair is to choose to be another than himself.”   Soren Kierkegaard

Why is purpose so important? Purpose sets the entire context for our lives. Without a clearly defined purpose, we are just a haphazard combination of goals and non-goals and actions and non-actions meandering through space and time. A purpose is a master plan for our life.

Knowing our purpose helps us define our goals and discover our true identity. It helps us avoid getting lost in the minutia of daily life by keeping our eyes on the target. It can make life much more enjoyable and effortless. Purpose is increasingly being touted as the key to navigating the complex, volatile, ambiguous world we face today, where strategy is ever changing and few decisions are obviously right or wrong. Living and working with purpose is a process of self-discovery–and one most of us never let ourselves undergo.

At its core, your purpose springs from your identity, the essence of who you are. Purpose is not a list of the education, experience, and skills you’ve gathered in your life. Purpose is also not a professional title, limited to your current job or organization. Where we fail to find purpose in life, loneliness and despair is inevitable. We live in a hyper-competitive world, where everyone strife to be known or heard, where everyone compete for space and time. What truly distinguishes us is the discovery of our divine purpose and the knowing that we are all part of a “grand design”.

No part consciously played in our daily life is insignificant, minute or small in achieving our goals, we just have to stick to who we are, and not staying to our true identity is a sense of self-betrayal and identity theft: “nothing is worse than self-betrayal”.   Finding your purpose is not easy. If it were, we’d all know exactly why we’re here and be living that purpose every minute of every day. We are constantly bombarded by powerful messages (from parents, bosses, management gurus, advertisers, celebrities) about what we should be (smarter, stronger, and richer) and about how to lead (empower others, lead from behind, be authentic, and distribute power).

To figure out who you are in such a world, let alone “be nobody but yourself”, is indeed hard work. However, when you have a clear sense of who you are, everything else follows naturally, everything around you will seem right including your challenges. Your purpose makes you distinctive. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a politician, a preacher, a church leader, employee, a call center rep or a software developer, your purpose is your brand, what you’re driven to achieve, and the “mystery” that makes you thick.

It’s not what you do, it’s howyou do what you do and why—the strengths and passions you bring to the table no matter where you find yourself. In discovery of purpose, you must daily look from within and not outwit, your attention should be how convenient and not how complacent you are. When we live our purpose we are not only been fulfilled but also creating a sense of purpose for those behind us.

Will you take steps to know who you truly are? And stop being everybody?
